GENERAL INSTRUCTION

Conventional
symbols

The following symbols are used in the tables:

Line ( - )

a) the event does not exist;

b) the event exists and is measured, but no cases have been recorded.

Three points
in square brackets ([...])

the event exists, but all data related to the reference year

are unknown for whatever reason, causing an interruption in the time series.

Four points ( .... )

the event exists, but some figures are unknown for whatever reason.

Two points ( .. )

a) values are less than half of the minimum unit used;

b) the values calculated are not significant due to the small dimension of the event.

Asterisk (*)

The value is omitted to safeguard statistical confidentiality;

Provisional data
and corrections

In some cases the figures related to more recent periods are provisional and therefore susceptible of correction in subsequent publications.

Figures contained in previous publications that do not correspond to those presented here are to be considered rectified in this release.The value is omitted to safeguard statistical confidentiality

Rounding

Due to rounding (values are often expressed in thousands or in millions) the same figures in different tables may slightly differ. For the same reason, totals in a table may not correspond to the sum of the respective components.

Percentage compositions are automatically rounded to the first decimal and, for this reason, the sum of the respective components may not be equal to 100%.

In some cases the percentages, quotients, rates and other indicators presented are calculated on the basis of absolute and not rounded values, while many figures in this publication are rounded (to thousands, millions, etc.). Therefore, recalculating indicators starting from the data presented here may produce slightly different results.

Class intervals

In tables showing the frequency distribution with class intervals, as a general rule the lowest values of each class are excluded and the highest values included in the range considered.

Age classes represent an exception, since age is expressed in completed years. For example: “0” refers to the age from birth to the day before the first birthday; the class “10-14 years” includes persons from their tenth birthday to the day before their 15th birthday; “75 years and over” refers to persons from their 75th birthday and over.

Euro

All values originally expressed in Liras have been converted into Euros on the basis of a fixed exchange rate of 1,936.27 liras for 1 Euro (since 1st January 1999, complying with the European Union Council Regulation n. 2866 dated 31st December 1998).
